CHAPTER 34

“Drink?” Prof Hulderich asked.

“Dying for one. It’s been a long day” Sandy lounged in the couch, while Prof walked to the bar to pour the malt.

“Must be weary after the long flight from Heathrow. Air France has the best timing. Not too long a wait for the Delta flight to Princeville151”

“It’s mid-afternoon, European time. Not too bad. Checking at five in the morning was the trying bit”

“Relax” handing the thirty-year-old Caol Ila152.

She took a sip “Islay”

“Right, dear. You’ve an élan of spotting the blend,” he smiled.

Sandy walked to the terrace with the drink. The eve zephyr stroked her face as she gazed at the ocean grey.

Prof followed “My modest retreat”

“Better than your Hamburg manse”

“Oh… a while back. Even with age, I’m young than before” he pulled a chair.

“Sure, you have”

“Hard work, relentless efficiency takes away the verve. More calm, quiet, laid-back here”

“Any regrets?” she settled beside.

“A wee bit. Wish I’d drunk life earlier quitting the rush. Insight is invariably late”

“It changes…” she retorted smiling.

“Driving force. This calm peace amid the wave buzz with a malt croons the jingle”

Sandy was over the porch across the greens to the stone fringe, which dissevered the lawns from the palms on motley sands - a banister splitting mortal and from illusion. She wished to drift to its crib, far from the routine. Looking back, the villa fitted a Pokémon153 ready for take-off. She hadn’t the chance to view it in dusk. Its façade notably stretched. She gawked at the vista with hills yonder washy into the Pacific ripples. The muffled waves waning into the piebald sands like the incessant time ceded, akin to the Prof Emeritus in his pacific nest.

“Lost?”

“Hypnotic. What more can one desire than stare at the bare, with your Caol Ila?”

“Go easy. Stronger than rest. 55%” Prof advised poesy Sandy.

“Baronial villa. Didn’t notice when I entered” she sauntered down the lawns

“Hidden amid the trees. You’d hardly notice it in the dark” he joined her “Let me show you around”

As they strolled, Prof delved to its history “It is Spanish Baroque style. Churrigueresque154 type”

“What’s that?”

“The style dates to 17th/ 18th century, where the Churriguera family incited the Guarini’s mix of Solomonic columns in composite order. Later it was modified to estipite155 inverted cone, obelisk shape”

Sandy without a clue of Spanish style, looked at its vivid grandeur in the brisk light.

“Eight rooms, a tennis court, two indoor spas, an outdoor hot tub with a separate AC office. Not bad” he added.

She strolled with the malt. Though wispy, she could see the pruned florae by its stone margin. The tiled path led to the remise, the AC office with bark-oak benches on either side guarding like a solider. They were carved in peculiar shapes, ranging from animals to wights. She stopped at one like Venus de Milo156 with spread-out arms, holding the seat like a floating sofa.
